Unlock that Door
Composed for the Day Seven Prompt of the 'Halls of Pandemonium' Challenge hosted by Bradley Ramsey
My house gurgles instead of just being the inanimate thing It was designed to be. I am so used to its antics that I seldom pause to pay heed to the variety of din audible through its walls. Doors, now doors I notice, long and well, giving them a history and context which they could do without. So I wasn't surprised to have noticed that new one. The one I always avoid, Unlike the rest. Seemingly shaped by the shadows of the walls, It was unremarkable, wanting to be defined by what it was not. But it seems to have decided to emerge and be known. Waiting to be opened, Pretending to be a nook door. It rattles in the middle of the night. Creaks when ignored during the daily chores, Tapping me on my shoulder with its hinge before I truly acknowledge it. It would suddenly be covered with bees or sound like it is, And sometimes hooks emerge on it shaped like arachnids. I had once made the mistake of opening it, When I first gave in to the mystery, it grips. But the nook that it pretended to hide, Was a quagmire that sucked my feet right in, Forcing me to observe the hanging wires. Cobweb-ridden wires that trapped eyes giving me slow lizard blinks, Confusing me with what transpired. There were upturned and open books floating shallow at the edge of What seemed like a lake... that sometimes turned into heaps of dark briars. Beyond that, I saw mirrors reflecting the various poses I'm in during the day, only to show that I'm morose, a lifeless crier. I blink, and the scene changes... Eels slithering over my feet which are now trapped in uncomfortable heels. With every blink, a reminder... Visions of my daily life sucking joy out of the wonders that nature provides. So now, I walk past it, aware that it's judging the life, I pretend to admire. Itching to return, only to know, If there was any change in those hidden signs that kindled a fire. These waves that have been nudging me Are leading me to those Halls that I strangely now desire.
